Philippe Pelé is a freelance sound engineer, music producer and bassist based in Hackney.
He originally hails from the French Alpine town of Chambéry, but adopted London as his home 25 years ago.
After founding ultra-punk outfit Stakhanov, Philippe’s musical career fully kicked off with the successful early 90’s alternative rock band, ‘Les Vindicators’, as frontman /songwriter sharing stages with artists such as Manu Chao, IAM, Doctor Feelgood among many others.
Under the influence of Public Enemy, he then switched to midi and samples based music production and started Sleng Teng Empire, his own personal project. He went on to spend several years living in Jamaica, where he developed an in-depth knowledge of dancehall, reggae and dub that has since informed his work
On his arrival in London, he was hired to work on the Bridges to Babylon album where he produced two remixes of the Rolling Stones’ Outta Control, under the name Bi-Polar. He also spent time in New York at the Hit Factory alongside Tony Maserati during the mixing of the classic first Beyonce album, where he provided essential vibes for the Sean Paul collaboration “Baby Boy”.
Every week, he releases a new urban instrumental on his e-boutique stebeats.com. Current works include collaboration with urban artists such as Sneakbo, Political Peak, Miss Trendy and with legendary UK Rave DJ, Grace Sands. On the live front, he has recently enjoyed appearing with different rock acts, playing bass again, something he definitely wants to do more of in the future.
